Applied Nutrition donates thousands to help alleviate child food poverty

Merseyside-based Applied Nutrition donates thousands to help alleviate child food poverty directly affecting children across the region

Leading International Sports Nutrition Brand Applied Nutrition has joined forces with Liverpool-based charity Nugent in order to tackle child hunger and food insecurity across Merseyside.

This year, as part of its 140th year celebrations, staff and volunteers at Nugent hope to rev-up the charity’s poverty alleviating efforts with the launch of a new mobile foodbank/pantry initiative.

The initiative will connect local businesses and philanthropists willing to donate food, goods, services and time with those most in need of support. Nugent hopes to get several vehicles on the road distributing essential supplies – as well as advice, training and support – via schools, community centres and other venues across Merseyside.

Thanks to Applied Nutrition’s support, Nugent will soon have its first mobile pantry on the road. They will be working together to distribute healthy breakfasts and snacks as well as nutritional advice to local children and families in areas of high need.

Thomas Ryder, Director of Applied Nutrition said “At Applied Nutrition we are passionate about everything we do and that includes supporting the community – especially in times of great uncertainty. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the challenges many local households face and it is heart wrenching to think that many children do not have regular access to good quality and nutritious food. This needs to change and we intend to help where we can”.

Sarah Swanson, Nugent’s Director of Pathways and Partnerships said “More than two in three children are living in poverty in parts of Merseyside and there are many areas without easy access to a supermarket. Local authority budgets have been cut and paradoxically cities such as Liverpool, who have one of the highest level of social deprivation in the country, have been hit the worst. The consequence is children going hungry, which highlights the importance of charities, such as ours, to step in and help. Not everyone can afford to travel to a foodbank, that’s why our pantry model will be mobile and in some cases deliver directly to families in greatest need”.

This support is only possible due to the generosity of, and collaboration with, organisations such as Applied Nutrition. This fantastic partnership will see vital support provided to children and families when they need it most. The impact of food poverty has immediate and lasting affects if not addressed. Children cannot learn, gown and develop if they are hungry and without nutritious food. Nugent are hopeful that their work through the food pantry will form part of the solution to alleviating food poverty across Merseyside.

Nugent are calling out to businesses and business leaders across Merseyside to get behind our mobile pantry initiative. It is not only food that many families cannot afford - it is heating, lighting, shelter, clothes, and toiletries.
