Investing in and regenerating much-loved local landmarks is something Torus is passionate about and its latest completion sees the team celebrate a new future for the former Allerton Fire and Police Station – a building now internationally renowned thanks to The Beatles song, Penny Lane.
The newly christened Station Mews represents an £8 million investment from Torus – of which £1.7 million was grant funded by Homes England through a bid via JV North. Torus has now transformed the formerly defunct site to create a modern, energy efficient development in the heart of Allerton, bringing a unique scheme to an area where affordable homes are in short supply.
With the scheme benefitting from the award-winning skills of Torus’ contracting arm – HMS – Allerton is the second large-scale refurbishment Torus and HMS has undertaken in a bid to add a new lease of life to an iconic local landmark that time had forgotten. Following on from the success of its redevelopment of the former Ogden’s Tobacco Factory in Everton, Station Mews has already had a lot of interest from local people looking to get on the property ladder and set up home in a thriving community.
The team are thrilled that Station Mews has been so successful in retaining key features of the former Fire and Police Stations all while creating something that is needed in the area – new, affordable homes for Shared Ownership.
Discussing the completion of Station Mews, Torus Chief Executive, Steve Coffey, said:
“Our communities are central to every development we undertake, and Station Mews clearly highlights our commitment to work with the fabric of the local area to create something unique and much needed. I’m thrilled to be celebrating this major milestone with the team who worked so hard to transform a forgotten site into something that will continue to benefit the people of Allerton, reflecting the history of this unique building.
“I’m proud not only of what we have created here but what Station Mews will now mean for its new residents and the wider Allerton area. Partnerships and collaboration are the crux of this scheme’s success, and I am thrilled that thanks to the input and hard work of Homes England, JV North and HMS, Station Mews is now finished and giving people the opportunity to own their own home in an area that will offer them so much.”
Kate Collins, Senior Manager – Provider Manager, from Homes England, continued:
“At Homes England we are committed to supporting our partners to increase the supply of good quality affordable housing in the communities where they’re needed most. The development at Station Mews has transformed an otherwise neglected building into much needed, good quality, affordable new homes in Allerton.”
HMS’ Managing Director, Paul Worthington, continued:
“It’s fantastic to see Station Mews complete – it really puts HMS’ achievements into perspective as it showcases so many of the team’s skills in a single development. From completely refurbishing the existing buildings to constructing new apartments and working with modular methods of construction, this scheme combines a number of techniques and trades, and I am thrilled with everything they have achieved here and what our partnership with Torus has delivered.”
